Fiona Charnley
—Background
Fiona gained her undergraduate degree in Industrial Design and Technology at Loughborough University before completing an MSc and PhD at Cranfield. Her doctoral research focused on the process of Whole System Design; a cross-disciplinary and integrated approach to the development of more sustainable and innovative products, services and systems.
Along side leading the MDes in Design and Innovation for Sustainability, Fiona leads the Sustainable Design-led Innovation (SDI) project, which is funded by the European Regional Development Fund. This project is a business support programme, which aims to help local SME’s to engage with early stage innovation driven by the sustainability agenda.
—Current Activities
Her current research interests include the development and implementation of tools, techniques and methodologies to demonstrate principles of sustainable design practice. Fiona has expertise across multiple approaches to designing for improved innovation and sustainability. Capturing, understanding and communicating behaviour and methodology used in sustainable design is a particular area of interest and competence.
